Dismissing noncitizen voting as ‘rare’ is misleading

The media’s tactic of labeling something as “rare” in order to dismiss it is both deceitful and hypocritical. This was recently demonstrated in the case of noncitizen voting concerns.

The Washington Post recently published an article titled “Noncitizen voting is rare. Republicans are focusing on it anyway,” using the typical approach of quoting “experts” who claim Republicans are overreacting and being labeled as racist. This cookie-cutter piece follows the usual pattern seen in liberal media outlets.

Ignoring the hypocrisy of dismissing issues as “rare,” the Washington Post fails to acknowledge that noncitizen voting is a topic Democrats are actively promoting. Several Democratic strongholds allow noncitizens to vote in local elections, despite legal challenges in some cases.

Furthermore, there have been instances of noncitizens illegally registering and voting in states like Texas and Pennsylvania, revealing systemic flaws in the voter registration process. This problem is exacerbated by states automatically registering voters when they obtain driver’s licenses, particularly in places where illegal immigrants are eligible for licenses.

Dismissing these concerns as rare is dishonest and irresponsible, especially when compared to the disproportionate focus on other rare issues like police shootings of black people. It may be time for the Washington Post to move beyond its biased framing and seriously consider the legitimate concerns raised by Republicans.
