In an interview with WBUR’s “Here and Now” on Thursday, Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) reiterated his concerns about President Joe Biden’s age and abilities, saying that the recent debate was a manifestation of these issues. Welch has previously called for Biden to step down in the 2024 presidential race, but clarified that he would still support the President if he decides to stay in the race.

Co-host Celeste Headlee asked Welch if he would continue to support Biden if he didn’t drop out of the race, to which Welch responded that he would, but believed it would be better for the party if Biden stepped aside. Welch emphasized the need for the party to come together behind their nominee, implying that Biden’s continued presence in the race could create divisions.

Welch reiterated his concerns about Biden’s age and abilities, stating that the debate was not just a “flubbed debate” but a manifestation of an age issue. He added that Americans have a right to be concerned about the President’s mental acuity and that this issue is not going away.
