Vice President Kamala Harris’s attempt to insert herself into the response to Hurricane Martin has been met with a rebuff from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is focused on preparing his state for the impending storm.
In an interview with Fox and Friends, DeSantis revealed that he had not been aware of Harris’s attempts to contact him, and made it clear that his priority is the safety and well-being of the people of Florida, not engaging with the vice president. “My focus has not been on dealing with Kamala Harris,” he said. “It’s not about her, it’s about the people of Florida.”
DeSantis suggested that Harris’s sudden interest in the hurricane response is politically motivated, pointing out that she has not reached out to him during previous storms. “We know it’s because of politics, we know it’s because of her campaign,” he said. “I have zero time to entertain these political games.”
In contrast, DeSantis has been in close communication with President Joe Biden, who has cancelled an upcoming international trip to focus on managing the storm response. DeSantis’s comments highlight the tension between Harris’s attempts to politicize the hurricane response and the governor’s focus on protecting his state’s residents.
