D.C.’s Online Sports Betting Suspended as City Waits for Budget Approval

Washington, D.C.’s online sports betting services have been suspended pending the approval of the city’s fiscal 2025 budget, which must be signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser by July 25. Once the budget is approved, sports betters will be able to place online bets, but for now, they must do so in person.

In a statement to the Washington Post, FanDuel announced that it will resume online sports betting as soon as the budget is approved. However, if Bowser fails to sign the budget by the deadline, it will automatically go into effect.

FanDuel is currently the only online sports betting service available in the city, having launched in April after the D.C. Lottery’s GambetDC service failed. The company temporarily suspended online betting on Tuesday.

Other companies, including BetMGM and Caesars, had planned to launch online betting services in the city, but their launch dates have been postponed. BetMGM was initially scheduled to go live on Monday, but it will now only be available to gamblers within a two-block radius of Nationals Park. The city’s budget for 2025 includes a bill that authorizes up to seven licenses for online sports betting, but companies like FanDuel are objecting to the expansion of licenses to other providers.
