The Justice Department has charged Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, and his wife with bribery, unlawful foreign influence, and money laundering.
They are accused of accepting bribes from companies in Azerbaijan and Mexico in exchange for advancing their interests in the U.S., particularly in affecting foreign policy related to Azerbaijan’s conflict with Armenia.
Cuellar has denied the allegations, stating that he and his wife are innocent and claiming that prosecutors refused to hear their side of the story.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that Cuellar is entitled to a fair trial and presumption of innocence, and Cuellar will temporarily step down from his position while the indictment is ongoing.
Cuellar’s home was previously raided as part of the investigation. Azerbaijan, where Cuellar promoted educational trips, is known for corruption and authoritarian rule.
Cuellar, a centrist Democrat, is running for reelection.
Truth Voices has contacted the Justice Department for comment.
