The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is set to open with Greta Gerwig’s jury and an honorary Palme d’Or for Meryl Streep. The festival kicks off with the screening of “The Second Act,” a French comedy, and will feature premieres of highly anticipated films throughout the 10-day event.

Notable movies to be showcased include “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” by George Miller, Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” and new works from acclaimed directors such as Paolo Sorrentino and Yorgos Lanthimos. However, off-screen drama has been a significant focus this year, with issues like the #MeToo movement in the French film industry and labor disputes among festival workers.

Stars like Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, and Nicolas Cage are expected to grace the red carpet, with George Lucas receiving an honorary Palme d’Or at the closing ceremony. The festival aims to maintain the high standard set by last year’s successful event, which produced multiple Oscar-nominated films.

France hopes to keep the global spotlight through the summer, with the Cannes Film Festival marking the beginning of a series of prestigious events including the French Open, the Tour de France, and the summer Olympics in Paris. The festival will also see the symbolic carrying of the Olympic flame up the steps of the Palais des Festivals on May 21.
