Colorado Gov. on Trump’s Plan: ‘If Somebody Commits a Crime, They Should Be Out’

In a recent interview on CNN’s The Source, Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his views on the handling of individuals in the country illegally who commit crimes. Polis, who is also a surrogate for the Harris-Walz campaign, was responding to a proposal by 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to expedite the removal of gang members who are in the country without authorization.

When asked about the issue, Polis acknowledged that if someone commits a crime while being in the United States without proper documentation, they should be deported. He emphasized that this stance is based on the principle that individuals who break the law should face consequences, regardless of their immigration status.

However, Polis also highlighted the complexities of the issue, particularly in cases where individuals from countries like Venezuela are involved. He noted that due to the absence of an extradition treaty between the United States and Venezuela, those individuals who are in the country illegally and commit crimes often have to be held in American prisons. Despite this challenge, Polis maintained that if someone who is in the country illegally commits a crime, they should be removed from the country.

Polis’ comments reflect the ongoing debate surrounding immigration and criminal justice in the United States. As a governor, he has likely grappled with the complexities of these issues firsthand, and his views offer insight into the nuances of the problem.
