CNN contributor Scott Jennings expressed concern about the implications of intense rhetoric surrounding former President Donald Trump during a live broadcast on Saturday. Following an attempt on Trump’s life, Jennings emphasized the need for unity and healing in the country, warning that the relentless hyperbole from media and Democrats has consequences.
“We’re talking about a country that’s already shaken, and we’re one inch from something far worse,” Jennings stressed. “I’m hearing from Republicans tonight who are shocked, worried about our country, worried about Donald Trump, and worried about the rhetoric surrounding him. The constant suggestion that if he wins an election, our country will end, our democracy will collapse, and it’s the last election we’ll ever have – these claims have real-world repercussions.”
Jennings refused to speculate on the motivations behind the shooter’s actions, but he highlighted the increased extremism surrounding Trump. “We’ve seen violence and near-misses, like the Supreme Court attempted murder of a justice or the congressional baseball game where Steve Scalise was nearly killed – an attack on a conservative, Republican politician,” he noted.
Jennings urged elected officials to recognize the devastating impact of hyperbolic rhetoric. “We need to hear from all political leaders that this kind of extremism must end. Political violence has no place in our society, and we must acknowledge its roots and work to stop it.”
