“Challengers” does not focus on polyamory – or anything else

In today’s climate where “polyamory” is a hot topic, the movie “Challengers” has stirred up discussion. The trailer shows Gen Z actress Zendaya caught between two men, leading to headlines praising the film for its representation of polyamory. However, the author Alex Abad-Santos has a different take on the film.

Abad-Santos believes that the film simplifies polyamory as being in love with two people at once, but the movie itself focuses more on ambition and rivalry than on polyamorous relationships. The story revolves around teenage tennis stars Tashi, Art, and Patrick, with Tashi manipulating the boys for her own gain.

Despite the sexual tension in the film, it surprisingly lacks intimacy, possibly due to Zendaya’s no-nudity clause. The storyline mainly follows the dynamics between the characters rather than exploring polyamory in depth. Ultimately, “Challengers” fails to deliver a compelling narrative or emotional depth.

As the movie culminates in a tennis match between Art and Patrick, it becomes evident that the film lacks a clear message or character development. The ambiguous ending leaves viewers feeling indifferent towards the characters’ fates.
