Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Broadway musical, “Suffs,” is facing challenges in filling seats during a crucial season. The musical, which tells the story of the 1913 suffragettes leading up to the 19th Amendment, reported an attendance rate of 81% in the week ending on May 5. However, its gross revenue remained relatively stagnant at just over $630,000 per week, according to the Broadway League.
Compared to other Broadway shows, “Suffs” ranks in the bottom quarter for attendance, despite being on the scene since 2022. Before its Broadway debut, the musical was reportedly sold out at the smaller Public Theater during an extended run. The cast includes Tony-winner Nikki M. James and has received six Tony nominations. Clinton, along with Malala Yousafzai, has a producer credit on the show.
The website for “Suffs” claims that the entire female and nonbinary cast is portraying “brilliant flawed women” who inspire audiences with their hard-won victory in the ongoing fight for equality. Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea, have been busy with their production company, HiddenLight Productions, which released the documentary “In Her Hands.” The film, available on Netflix, follows the story of Zarifa Ghafari, Afghanistan’s first female mayor, leading up to the fall of Kabul in August 2021.
