The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Trustees has decided to discontinue its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs following significant anti-Israel demonstrations on campus. The trustees voted unanimously to redirect the $2.3 million allocated to DEI programs towards police and public safety measures as part of the annual budget approval process. This decision comes after a diversity, equity, and inclusion regulation adopted in 2019 was proposed to be amended. The university faces concerns of administrative bloat, with possible job cuts resulting from the discontinuation of DEI programs.
Chair David Boliek acknowledged the need to prioritize public safety and teaching efforts over administrative expenses. Trustee Marty Kotis emphasized the importance of considering the needs of all students, not just those involved in disruptive protests. Meanwhile, MIT recently announced the removal of diversity statements in the faculty hiring process, citing a focus on excellence and freedom of expression. MIT President Sally Kornbluth noted that compelled statements do not align with the university’s goal of fostering an inclusive environment.
