At a recent rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a group of black voters expressed their support for Donald Trump, citing his commitment to values and morals rather than skin color.
Anthony, a resident of Kalamazoo, told Fox News that Democrats have taken the black vote for granted. “When we speak, they don’t listen,” he said, echoing a sentiment shared by many in the community.
Despite Biden’s significant lead among black voters in the 2020 election, recent polls suggest that Trump’s support among this demographic has increased. A CBS News/YouGov poll found that Biden’s support among black voters had dropped to 75%, while Trump’s had risen to 24%.
Another poll conducted by Ipsos in June revealed that only 38% of black respondents believed that Biden’s policies had benefited the black community.
With Biden out of the race and Vice President Kamala Harris now the Democratic nominee, some are wondering if she can regain the support of black voters who have shifted towards Trump.
Jermaine, a Detroit resident, emphasized that his support for Trump is based on shared values, not skin color. “Not all of us think of ourselves in relation to our skin color,” he said. “This is really about values and morals and how you see the world.”
Henry, from Battle Creek, expressed frustration with the left’s approach to addressing racial issues. “No person is special because of their race,” he said. “You don’t have to treat us like we’re a brand-new creature, OK? Trying to make me think that I deserve more than somebody else, I’ve been mistreated more than others. No. We’re just normal people.”
Austin, another black voter, pointed to Trump’s economic record as a key factor in his support. “It doesn’t matter how they look. It doesn’t matter where they come from. Everybody wants to succeed,” he said. “They want a chance at that American future… and if the conservative movement shows them that that’s where they’re going to find that success, then guess where they’re going to go?”
Martin, from Grandville, shared similar sentiments, stating that the Democrats have taken the black vote for granted. “The black vote has long stood with the Democratic Party… and I feel like they have taken that for granted and they haven’t done much with it,” he said.
Chris, a Detroit resident, criticized Democrats for their perceived condescension towards black voters. “They think that we’re all broke,” he said. “They think that we need handouts. And it’s just not like that. We’re hardworking people.”
