Biden supports internal dissent in Netanyahu government following Gaza conflict

President Joe Biden is supporting a rebellion within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government regarding the future of postwar Gaza. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant publicly expressed his opposition to prolonged Israeli control in Gaza and advocated for Palestinian entities, assisted by Arab states, to take charge instead.

Gallant emphasized the need for political action alongside the military campaign in Gaza. He asserted that Israeli military or civilian rule in Gaza after Hamas is not desirable, and called for the establishment of a governing alternative led by non-terrorist Palestinians with international support to ensure Israel’s interests.

The Biden administration welcomed Gallant’s stance, as it aligns with their goal of Palestinian Authority rule in Gaza towards the establishment of a Palestinian state. On the other hand, Netanyahu envisioned a future for Gaza as a trade hub run by Palestinians without formal sovereignty, delaying formal planning until Hamas is defeated.

The political turmoil sparked by Gallant’s speech has drawn various reactions within Israel, with some advocating for his dismissal while others defend his position. The White House has shown support for those challenging Netanyahu, possibly reflecting frustration with Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Overall, the situation highlights differing perspectives on the governance of postwar Gaza and the complexities involved in establishing a peaceful and secure future for the region.
