Biden Favors Shapiro and Walz as Harris’s Running Mate

According to sources close to the White House, President Joe Biden has expressed his preferences for Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, with Governors Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Tim Walz of Minnesota emerging as his top choices.

While Biden has publicly remained neutral on the matter, telling reporters that he will let Harris make her own decision, a senior adviser revealed that he has a strong affinity for both Shapiro and Walz. The adviser cited Shapiro’s crucial role in defending the state of Pennsylvania against lawsuits during the 2020 election, as well as his ability to deliver victories for the Democratic Party in the key swing state.

However, the adviser suggested that Biden’s fondness for Walz may be even stronger. The two were seen mingling with voters over beers at an infrastructure event in Wisconsin in January, and the adviser noted that Walz’s presence seemed to put Biden in an unusually good mood.

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona was also mentioned as a potential contender, although the adviser noted that Biden does not have a close personal relationship with him. Instead, Biden is said to appreciate Kelly’s qualifications and experience.

As Harris prepares to announce her running mate ahead of a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday, the top contenders are expected to undergo final interviews over the weekend. In addition to Shapiro, Walz, and Kelly, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky are also seen as leading candidates.
