President Joe Biden’s lackluster campaign is facing a significant challenge as the 2024 election approaches, with the issue of democracy emerging as a key point of contention. Following the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, Democrats have been emphasizing the importance of protecting democracy in the face of former President Donald Trump’s potential return to the White House. However, recent polls suggest that Trump and Republicans may have an edge on this issue.
According to a recent Rasmussen Reports poll, a significant portion of likely voters believe that Trump was a better protector of democracy than Biden. When asked about Biden’s performance in preserving, protecting, and defending the Constitution, only 40% of respondents said he was doing a better job, while 47% believed he was doing worse. Additionally, a majority of likely voters expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s handling of the Constitution, with 55% rating his performance as fair to poor.
Partisanship clearly influences these opinions, with more Republicans than Democrats holding a very favorable view of the Constitution. As the 2024 election cycle heats up, the issue of democracy is likely to continue shaping political discourse and voter preferences.
