Senator Josh Hawley is pushing for a new legislation to stop the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from issuing photo ID cards to migrants arriving at the southern border and being released into American communities. The Secure Docket Card program, which is set to start this summer, will provide photo IDs to migrants released into the U.S. interior.
In response, Hawley has introduced the “No Taxpayer Funds for Illegal Immigrant Identity Cards Act” to prevent taxpayer money from being used for DHS-issued photo IDs for migrants. He believes that instead of funding ID cards for illegal immigrants, Biden should focus on deporting them and securing the border.
Hawley’s legislation also demands transparency on the costs associated with the program and would require the inspector general to disclose these expenses. He has been vocal about his concerns dating back to 2022 when the program was first developed, highlighting issues of migrants using arrest warrants and deportation orders to bypass TSA screenings at airports.
The program is expected to benefit thousands of migrants released into American communities every few weeks, with a high likelihood of around 70 to 90 percent of migrants being freed under the Biden administration. Hawley is taking a stand against what he sees as a policy that undermines the rule of law and is advocating for stricter border control measures.
