Part of Texas Bridge Collapses After Barge Collision, Resulting in Oil Spill

A barge collision in Texas causes a bridge to partially collapse and an oil spill. The incident took place on the bridge connecting Galveston with Pelican Island. One person fell into the water but was quickly rescued. The damaged section was a disused railroad bridge next to the highway.

The collision happened when a tugboat lost control of two fuel barges, resulting in an oil spill. Authorities closed a 6.5-mile stretch of the waterway to contain the spill and begin cleanup operations. The bridge was shut down as a precaution, with engineers en route to assess any potential damage.

Multiple agencies, including the Coast Guard and Texas Department of Transportation, responded to the incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. This incident follows a similar one in Baltimore, where a cargo ship crashed into a bridge, causing fatalities among construction workers.
