House GOP aims to solidify law-and-order platform during National Police Week

During National Police Week, House Republicans are preparing to introduce a series of bills in support of law enforcement to strengthen their law-and-order agenda leading up to the 2024 election. These bills will focus on increasing protections for police officers and denouncing what Republicans perceive as “soft-on-crime” policies from the Biden administration. Additionally, there will be provisions addressing the issue of illegal immigration at the southern border, which has become a contentious topic in Congress.

Key legislation includes a proposal to deport illegal immigrants who assault police officers, requiring them to be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement until they are deported. Another bill aims to have Attorney General Merrick Garland report on the impact of Biden’s border policies on law enforcement.

Furthermore, there is a bill to expand concealed carry rights for qualified law enforcement officers and another bill to give Congress oversight power over D.C. Council to block laws related to public safety they view as lenient on crime. Overall, these bills seek to prioritize law enforcement and address concerns about crime rates and border security.
