Polis, who is also a surrogate for the Harris-Walz campaign, was responding to a proposal by 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to expedite the removal of gang members who are in the country without authorization.

He noted that due to the absence of an extradition treaty between the United States and Venezuela, those individuals who are in the country illegally and commit crimes often have to be held in American prisons. Despite this challenge, Polis maintained that if someone who is in the country illegally commits a crime, they should be removed from the country.
