UN Reduces Estimate of Gaza Children Killed by 50%, Citing ‘Fog of War’ as Cause for Mistakes

The United Nations has revised its estimate of Palestinian children killed in Gaza, cutting the number in half. This raises doubts about the accuracy of figures often cited by international news outlets and governments to criticize Israel’s actions against Hamas in Gaza. According to the Jerusalem Post, the original data showed a higher number of casualties, including many women and children. However, the UN has now corrected these numbers, indicating that the initial figures may have been exaggerated.

David Adesnik from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies believes this change indicates a recognition of the lack of evidence behind Hamas’s original claims of casualties. The UN attributed the discrepancy to the “fog of war,” acknowledging the challenges of accurately counting casualties during conflicts.

Israeli government spokesman Avi Hyman stated that Israel’s estimate of casualties included both terrorists and civilians, emphasizing the need to distinguish between the two groups when reporting on casualties in Gaza. Media outlets often rely on figures from Gaza’s health ministry, controlled by Hamas, without verifying the accuracy or context of the information.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s assessment of Israel’s actions in Gaza has been called into question, as a State Department report stated that reaching conclusive findings on individual incidents was challenging. Despite allegations of violating international law, Israel maintains its commitment to international humanitarian law and the law of armed conflict in its operations against Hamas.

Overall, the revised estimates and conflicting reports highlight the complexities of reporting on casualties in conflict zones and the importance of verifying information from multiple sources.
