Aisha Mills, a Democratic strategist, appeared on MSNBC’s “The Beat” on Friday, where she claimed that the November elections are fundamentally a contest between two types of masculinity: the toxic, patriarchal variety embodied by Donald Trump, and the more holistic, tender approach represented by Democrats.
Mills argued that the contrast between these two forms of masculinity is stark, with Trump’s brand of toxic masculinity characterized by bullying, bravado, and a paternalistic attitude towards women. She described Trump’s approach as “toxic” and “demeaning,” citing his comments on women and his stance on issues such as reproductive rights.
In contrast, Mills portrayed the Democratic side as embodying a more nuanced and tender sense of masculinity, which values empathy, public service, and a commitment to equality. She highlighted the examples of Coach Tim Walz, a veteran and coach, and former President Barack Obama, who she described as embodying a multifaceted and compassionate approach to masculinity.
Mills suggested that voters are drawn to the Democratic approach because it offers a more inclusive and respectful vision of masculinity, one that recognizes the value and equality of women. She asked, “Do you want a toxic masculinity that undermines and demeans women, or do you want someone who believes that their mothers and daughters and their sisters are all equal to them?”
