Ex-Sheriff Shawn Stines Maintains Innocence in Judge’s Slaying

A former Kentucky sheriff, Shawn “Mickey” Stines, is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing, following his resignation from his position as Letcher County sheriff. According to his attorney, Kerri Bartley, Stines’ decision to step down was not a concession to the allegations against him, but rather a move to allow him to focus on his defense while ensuring the continued safety and well-being of his constituents.

Stines, 43, has maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to the charge of murder. The Kentucky State Police investigation suggests that he shot and killed District Judge Kevin Mullins in the judge’s chambers at the courthouse in September, following a heated argument. Witnesses reported that Stines entered the judge’s outer office, requested a private meeting with Mullins, and then fired multiple shots after the two men stepped into the judge’s chambers. Stines subsequently surrendered to police, walking out of the chambers with his hands raised.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, with authorities declining to comment on the circumstances surrounding the incident. Stines’ actions have left the community reeling, and the case has garnered significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the victim and the accused.

If convicted, Stines faces a potential sentence of 20 years to life in prison. However, due to the fact that the victim was a public official, the possibility of the death penalty also looms. The case is set to unfold further in court on Tuesday, as Stines prepares to face the charges against him.
