A U.S. Border Patrol agent has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for attempting to smuggle a female migrant from El Salvador into Texas. Fernando Castillo, 42, pleaded guilty to one count of bribery of a public official in February. The criminal complaint stated that Castillo offered to help the migrant, who was initially going to be sent back to El Salvador, by getting her released to Mexico for $5,000. However, he was caught after the woman discovered he had stolen $500 from her belongings and reported him to authorities. Investigators then arrested Castillo after he attempted to obtain fraudulent documents for the woman.
