Gov. Roy Cooper: Harris Win in North Carolina Would Secure Presidency

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) expressed confidence on Sunday that a win for Vice President Kamala Harris in the Tar Heel State would secure her the presidency.

Appearing on CBS News’s Face the Nation, Cooper highlighted Harris’s frequent campaign visits to North Carolina, as well as the state’s narrow margin in the 2020 presidential election, as evidence that she understands the importance of winning the state. Cooper noted that Harris has visited North Carolina 17 times, demonstrating her commitment to the state and her recognition of its significance in the election.

“If she wins North Carolina, she is the next president of the United States,” Cooper said, emphasizing that a Harris victory in the state would block former President Donald Trump’s path to the White House.

Host Margaret Brennan questioned Cooper about the impact of rural voters on the election, asking whether the Democrats’ goal is to win over these voters or simply reduce the margin of loss. Cooper pointed to his own efforts to expand Medicaid and increase access to high-speed internet as examples of initiatives that could persuade rural voters to support the Democratic ticket.

Cooper also highlighted Harris’s economic plan, which he said includes measures to lower costs for childcare and prescription drugs. However, Harris has faced criticism from Republicans for lacking a clear policy agenda, with just two months to go before the election.

Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson weighed in on the issue earlier on Sunday, suggesting that Harris “needs to be told what her policies are because she doesn’t really know what they are.”

The latest polling from RealClearPolitics shows a tight race for the battleground state of North Carolina, with Trump leading Harris 47.9% to 47.2% in a head-to-head race.
