Mike Johnson must have felt a sense of satisfaction when he opened The New York Times website on Thursday morning and saw his face at the top of the page with an article declaring him the “Speaker of the whole House” after Democrats saved his position.
It seems that this recognition is what drives Johnson, as his actions do not seem to align with the interests of Republican voters. Since becoming speaker six months ago, his victories have mostly consisted of supporting Joe Biden’s agenda and making questionable decisions, such as allocating taxpayer dollars to questionable areas and re-authorizing warrantless spying on Americans.
Despite receiving praise from Democrats and the media, including being compared to Churchill and declaring himself a “wartime speaker,” these accolades did not last long. Johnson found himself disappointed when Biden made a decision regarding Israel that was not in line with his expectations. He quickly voiced his concerns to the White House, only to find out that the decision had nothing to do with previous agreements.
It seems that Johnson may have been fooled by Democrats, as his actions have made their jobs easier while failing to advance his own agenda. Despite feeling betrayed and not receiving what was promised, Johnson must understand that blindly following the president’s party is not the solution. It is essential to take action that aligns with one’s own beliefs and goals, even in a situation where the majority is slim.
In the end, Johnson’s actions highlight the challenges of leadership and the importance of staying true to one’s values. It is clear that simply going along with the status quo is not an effective strategy for success.
