New York Republicans are demanding an investigation into Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration following the arrest of former top aide Linda Sun, who has been charged with conspiring to act as an agent of influence for China.
Representatives Elise Stefanik, Mike Lawler, and Claudia Tenney are among those calling for a thorough investigation into Sun’s activities and her connections to the Hochul administration. Sun, a naturalized American citizen born in China, was indicted on charges of conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act, failure to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, money laundering, and visa fraud.
Sun’s husband, Chris Hu, was also charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, misuse of means identification, and money laundering conspiracy. Stefanik released a statement accusing Hochul of allowing “Communist Chinese spy Linda Sun unfettered access to the highest levels of New York State government.”
“This is another example of New York Democrats facilitating the influence campaign of Communist China,” Stefanik said. “I am calling for a complete investigation surrounding Hochul and her administration to provide hardworking New York taxpayers the transparency they deserve.”
Lawler also expressed concern, stating that it was “alarming” to have a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) agent on Hochul’s staff. “The fact that Kathy Hochul had a CCP agent on her staff is incredibly alarming and must be investigated further,” Lawler said. “How else did this foreign agent impact the Governor’s decision-making? The public deserves to know.”
Tenney echoed the call for a “full investigation” in a post on X, stating that the Chinese Communist Party had installed a spy at the highest levels of the state government under Hochul. “New Yorkers have the right to know all the decisions Hochul made that were influenced by the CCP. We need a full investigation immediately.”
Sun had also worked as an aide for former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
