A recent attack on a highway in the Mexican state of Sonora has left two women dead, and the governor is urging motorists to exercise caution when traveling in the area. The victims, identified as Enedina N. and Ubaldina N., were found in a Nissan Pathfinder with Arizona license plates, which had been shot at and overturned.
Initially, reports suggested that the victims were both American citizens, but Governor Alfonso Durazo later clarified that they were originally from Caborca, Mexico. However, a Tucson television station reported that the U.S. State Department confirmed that one of the women was an American citizen, while the other was a lawful permanent resident of the United States.
The Sonora Attorney General’s Office reported that the vehicle was found along kilometer 221 of the Sonoyta-Caborca highway, with signs of bullet damage and overturned. The Mexican army and National Guard troops were involved in the investigation.
Governor Durazo acknowledged that there was initially “erroneous information” about the victims’ identities, but stated that they have been identified and the vehicle and weapons used in the attack have been seized. The vehicle seized was a blue Ford F-150 pickup, previously reported as stolen, and the weapons included four AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and ballistic vests.
No arrests have been reported in connection with the attack, but Governor Durazo stated that they have identified the “criminal group” responsible. He warned motorists to exercise caution when traveling in the area, not just in Sonora but anywhere in the country or the world.
