In a surprise move, Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed his willingness to serve in a potential Donald Trump administration, sharing a photo of himself at a podium with the words “Department of Government Efficiency” emblazoned below.

Musk’s announcement comes on the heels of a recent conversation with Trump in an X Space, where the two discussed pressing issues such as government spending, economic growth, and rising grocery prices. Musk also seized the opportunity to pitch his idea for a government efficiency commission, aimed at reducing waste and ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.

“I think a government efficiency commission would be fantastic,” Musk explained. “It would take a close look at government spending and ensure that taxpayers’ hard-earned money is being used effectively.” Musk even offered to lend his expertise to such a commission, should it be established.

During the conversation, Musk also sounded the alarm on the nation’s ballooning deficit, warning that the U.S. is adding a staggering trillion dollars to its debt every 100 days. “The interest payments on the national debt have now surpassed the defense budget,” Musk noted, citing the staggering figure of over $1 trillion. “It’s a growing concern that needs to be addressed.”

Musk’s comments come as the national debt continues to soar, currently standing at a staggering $35 trillion, according to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation’s national debt clock. With his willingness to serve in a Trump administration, Musk may have an opportunity to put his ideas for government efficiency into action.
