Country music legend Randy Travis has regained his voice with the help of artificial intelligence. After suffering from a viral cardiomyopathy and a stroke in 2013, Travis had to relearn basic functions and struggled with a condition called aphasia, limiting his ability to speak. Now, with the release of his new song “Where That Came From,” created using AI technology, Travis’ iconic voice is back.

Warner Music Nashville co-president Cris Lacy approached Travis and his wife Mary with the idea of using AI to recreate Travis’ voice. Developers in London created a proprietary AI model using vocal stems from Travis’ career, resulting in a near-perfect replication of his unique vocal style. The emotional experience of hearing his voice again was overwhelming for Travis and those involved in the project.

Mary Travis emphasizes the human element of the collaboration, highlighting the positive impact AI can have on music creation when used responsibly. The project aims to educate people on the potential of AI in music while also advocating for artist control over their work.

While there may be more original Randy Travis songs in the future, the focus remains on creating meaningful music that honors his legacy. This innovative use of AI technology sets a standard for respectful collaboration between artists and technology, ensuring that artists receive proper credit and maintain control over their creative output.
