House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil, a Republican from Wisconsin, has raised concerns about the Washington, D.C., Board of Elections’ promotion of noncitizen voting. He expressed his unease with the passage and advocacy of the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022, which permits noncitizens to vote in local elections. A recent postcard from the board encouraging noncitizens to vote prompted Steil to send a letter seeking answers.
Steil emphasized that American elections should be reserved for American citizens only and that promoting noncitizen voting in local elections undermines confidence in the electoral process. As the Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on House Administration, he is focused on holding the D.C. Board of Elections accountable and putting a stop to noncitizen voting.
The postcard provided instructions for noncitizens to register to vote, noting that they could only participate in local elections. Steil’s letter to the board outlined his concerns about the Act and its implications, given that federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections.
In his letter, Steil posed several questions to the board, including inquiring about the eligibility of embassy personnel of foreign governments to participate in U.S. capital affairs. He is determined to address the issue of noncitizen voting and ensure the integrity of American elections.
