In the latest developments, Russia launched a series of missile attacks against Ukraine targeting its energy infrastructure. The Ukrainian air force reported that 34 missiles were launched overnight, with 21 being intercepted by their air defenses. Energy facilities in Dnipropetrovsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Lviv were attacked, resulting in damage and casualties.
DTEK, a private energy operator, confirmed that four of its thermal power plants were damaged in the attacks. This comes after Russia previously targeted Ukraine’s power plants in a similar attack earlier this month.
To combat these attacks, Ukraine has appealed to its Western allies for additional air defense systems. The U.S. has pledged to provide Ukraine with more munitions and gear for its air defense launchers. In a separate incident, a psychiatric hospital in Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, was damaged, injuring one person. Additionally, an attack on the city of Vovchansk resulted in a fatality.
On the Russian side, air defense systems intercepted drones over the Krasnodar region and the Moscow-annexed Crimean Peninsula. Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted an oil refinery in the Krasnodar region, causing a fire at the Slavyansk oil refinery. Ukrainian Energy Ministry confirmed drone attacks on two oil refineries in the region.
In a separate incident, five people were wounded in a drone attack in a border village in Russia’s Belgorod region. Both countries are facing escalating tensions and attacks on each other’s territories.
