Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took to Instagram to express her support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s selection of Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) as her running mate. In her remarks, Ocasio-Cortez portrayed the Harris-Walz ticket as a return to normalcy, contrasting it with the “creepy” and “weird” ticket of former President Donald Trump and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).
Ocasio-Cortez described Trump and Vance as being “obsessed” with women’s bodies and reproductive systems, as well as LGBT individuals. She argued that their fixation on these issues is not characteristic of “normal people” and that they need to “keep their hands to themselves.”
The New York Democrat emphasized that the kind of normalcy she is advocating for is not a return to the status quo, but rather a commitment to progress and a policy agenda that prioritizes the needs of working-class Americans. She argued that the Democratic Party needs to move beyond the “triangulation politics” of the 1990s and return to its roots as a populist, working-class party that fights for racial, women’s, and LGBT rights.
Ocasio-Cortez envisioned a Democratic Party that integrates a “modern intersectional lens” and is aware of the material identity values of its constituents. She expressed her enthusiasm for a party that is “not just superficial” in its commitment to social justice, but rather one that is deeply invested in creating a more equitable society.
In her remarks, Ocasio-Cortez also took aim at the Trump-Vance ticket, describing it as “creepy” and “weird.” She argued that their brand of politics is not in line with American values and that the Harris-Walz ticket represents a more authentic and inclusive vision for the country.
