The highly anticipated second season of HBO’s The Last of Us has finally gotten its first teaser, offering a glimpse into what’s to come in 2025. The brief trailer begins with Joel (Pedro Pascal) in a conversation with a mysterious new character, played by Catherine O’Hara, who appears to be his therapist. As they discuss his past actions, Joel is forced to confront the consequences of his decisions.

The teaser also introduces several new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby and Jeffrey Wright’s Isaac, who reprises his role from the video game. Additionally, Isabela Merced’s Dina makes an appearance, while returning cast members Gabriel Luna’s Tommy and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie are shown in intense action scenes.

As previously announced, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have decided to split the events of The Last of Us Part II video game into two seasons, citing the complexity of the story. The second season will consist of seven episodes, with a natural break before the third season, which is expected to be “significantly larger.”

The first season of The Last of Us largely followed the events of the game, with some notable deviations. The teaser for season two suggests that this trend will continue, with at least one significant difference already apparent. In the game, Joel only shares the events of the hospital with his brother, but in the teaser, he is seen confiding in Catherine O’Hara’s character.

The teaser was part of HBO’s Coming to Max trailer, which also featured previews for several other upcoming shows, including The Penguin, Dune: Prophecy, It: Welcome to Derry, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdom, the next Game of Thrones spinoff.
