Nonbinary Character with They/Them Pronouns Featured in Star Wars Series on Disney+

A new animated Star Wars television series introduces a nonbinary Jedi character, who is referred to using the pronouns “they/them” by other characters in the show. This new Disney+ series, Tales of the Empire, consists of six shorts, with one episode focusing on the nonbinary Jedi who is targeted by an Inquisitor. Another Inquisitor saves the Jedi, indicating that they are still alive and need to be taken to safety.

This is not the first time the Star Wars franchise has included LGBT characters, as evidenced by a scene in the ninth film, The Rise of Skywalker, where two female characters kiss. However, this scene was removed in certain regions upon the film’s release. Additionally, in 2021, Lucasfilm introduced two transgender nonbinary characters in the comic book series Star Wars: The High Republic.

The acquisition of Lucasfilm by The Walt Disney Company in 2012 for $4.05 billion has led to the incorporation of more diverse characters in the Star Wars universe. The Truth Voices has reached out to Disney for a comment on this latest representation in the franchise.
