Former Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) appeared on MSNBC’s Katy Tur Reports on Thursday, where she defended Vice President Kamala Harris against potential criticism that she is out of touch with the rest of the country.
Host Katy Tur posed the question, “How does Harris combat the narrative that she’s a progressive Californian who is disconnected from the rest of the nation?”
Boxer responded by highlighting Harris’s experience as Vice President, saying, “She’s represented the entire country for nearly four years. She’s not just a Californian, she’s a national leader.” Boxer also drew parallels to her own experiences, recalling that she faced similar criticisms during her own Senate campaigns.
Boxer emphasized that Harris embodies the values of mainstream America, saying, “She’s the hope, she’s the opportunity, she’s the American dream.” In contrast, Boxer characterized Harris’s opponents as “extreme” and seeking to take the country backward.
Boxer also noted that the Democratic Party, which has historically been diverse in its views, is now united behind Harris thanks to President Biden’s endorsement. “We run the gamut from left to right, but because of President Biden’s endorsement and who Kamala Harris is, we are united, and that’s remarkable,” Boxer said.
