UC Riverside Student Suspended for Possessing Assault Rifle

0:00

The University of California Riverside recently announced that a student has been suspended after an assault rifle, ammunition, and five high-capacity magazines were found in their dorm room. UCR police conducted a search after discovering evidence of a weapon on campus, leading to the discovery of the items. The student in question has left the university and will not return until an administrative hearing is held.

Possession, use, or manufacture of firearms is against the school’s policy, and while the student was not arrested by UCR police, the case has been passed on to the Riverside County District Attorney for possible charges. The incident is not believed to be linked to any recent campus events, including ongoing pro-Palestinian protests.

In response to the incident, UCR implemented changes such as the discontinuation of study abroad programs in certain countries, and the formation of a student task force to oversee investments related to arms manufacturing. Pressure on universities, including UCR, to divest from Israel has been ongoing amid the conflict in Gaza.
