Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, delivered a historic speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Thursday evening. However, his speech did not impress California Governor Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democrat, who took to social media to describe it as “boring” and accuse Trump of “rambling” and being a “liar.”
The 92-minute speech was notable for being Trump’s first public appearance since he was targeted in an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, just two days prior. During the speech, Trump outlined his vision for America and recounted the harrowing details of the attempted attack, which left him shaken.
In his speech, Trump described how he was shot through the ear and nearly killed, but managed to escape death by mere centimeters. He emotionally recounted the moments following the shooting, including the sight of blood pouring everywhere and the sound of bullets continuing to fly.
Trump attributed his survival to the grace of God and the faith that guided him. He also took a moment to honor the life of Corey Comperatore, a Pennsylvania firefighter who was killed during the assassination attempt while shielding his family from gunfire.
Comperatore’s sacrifice was met with a standing ovation from the crowd, and Trump walked across the stage to pay his respects, hugging and kissing the firefighter’s uniform. In his speech, Trump praised Comperatore as a “fine man” who gave his life to protect others.
Governor Newsom did condemn the attack on Trump, saying that “violence has NO place in our democracy” and offering his thoughts to the former President and everyone impacted by the incident. However, his criticism of Trump’s speech remained pointed, with Newsom reiterating his claim that Trump’s address was “boring” and filled with lies.
