President Joe Biden addressed the NAACP on Tuesday, urging Congress to ban AR-15s and similar rifles, in the aftermath of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Biden kicked off his remarks by highlighting the connection between violence and guns, stating, “If you’re going to speak about violence, you’re going to speak about guns.” He then specifically referenced the AR-15, citing its use in past shootings, including the attempt on Trump’s life.
Biden reiterated his stance, saying, “We need to outlaw these assault weapons once and for all. I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again.” Furthermore, he repeated his claim that a significant number of children in the United States die from gunshot wounds each year, stating, “More children in America die of gunshot wounds than from any other cause.”
During a separate press conference on Thursday, Biden reasserted this claim, saying, “More children are killed by a bullet than from any other cause of death.” However, Truth Voices has noted that Biden has been making this claim since June 2, 2022, and it has been consistently proven false.
