Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is urging the Secret Service to reconsider its decision to allow firearms within the “soft perimeter” of the upcoming Republican National Committee’s convention in Milwaukee, following the shooting of former President Donald Trump on Saturday. The governor believes it is crucial to take additional measures to ensure the safety of convention attendees, law enforcement, and the local community.
Evers’s request comes after Trump was shot in the ear during a rally in Pennsylvania, leaving one person dead and two others injured. The Secret Service has maintained that its planned protocol for the convention will not change, but Evers’s office will reportedly relay his request to the agency.
The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks as the shooter and is investigating the incident as a possible assassination attempt of the former president and a possible domestic terrorist attack. President Joe Biden has condemned the shooting and called for an independent investigation, also asking the Secret Service to review all security measures for the RNC convention.
The convention is set to take place at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee from Monday to Thursday. Evers previously issued an executive order allowing city, state, and federal officials to coordinate resources and respond to potential emergencies and large-scale events surrounding the convention.
