During an ABC News interview with George Stephanopoulos, President Biden was asked about Sen. Mark Warner’s recent efforts to gather a group of Senate Democrats to demand that Biden withdraw from the presidential election. Stephanopoulos revealed that The Washington Post had reported that Warner was assembling a group of senators to try to convince Biden to stand down because they don’t think he can win.

Biden responded by calling Warner a “good man” who had also tried to get the nomination in the past. “Mark’s a good man,” Biden said. “He also tried to get the nomination too. Mark’s not… Mark and I have a different perspective. I respect him.”

When asked about the effort from Warner to replace him on the ticket, Biden reiterated his respect for Warner, saying, “Mark is a good man… he also tried to get the nomination too.”

Sen. Mark Warner has served as a senator for Virginia since 2009, after defeating former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore in the 2008 election. Prior to his Senate tenure, Warner served as the governor of Virginia between 2002 and 2006.

In 2006, Warner had considered running for president in 2008, but ultimately ruled out a bid after a year of consideration. He explained that he had spent a lot of time reflecting, praying, and soul-searching before making the decision not to run.
