A 39-year-old man in Rhode Island, identified as David Ziegenfuss, died earlier this year after a firework explosion on his head, which is now under investigation by local authorities.

According to Chief Gingerella, the cause of death was determined to be a “blast injury” to Ziegenfuss’ head, which occurred on May 12.

A recent report from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) highlighted a concerning trend in fireworks-related deaths over the past 15 years. In 2022, at least 11 people lost their lives, and an estimated 10,200 were injured in incidents involving fireworks.

CPSC Chair Alex Hoehn-Saric emphasized the importance of consumers being aware of the risks associated with using fireworks, stating that it’s crucial to prevent injuries and tragedies. He urged people to watch professional fireworks displays instead of attempting to use them themselves.

The CPSC’s Office of Compliance and Field Operations is working closely with other federal agencies to prevent the sale of illegal consumer fireworks.
