Trump Calls Out ‘Deranged’ Jack Smith After Supreme Court Decision

In a strongly worded statement, former President Donald Trump lashed out at special counsel Jack Smith following a Supreme Court decision that granted him partial immunity from charges related to his conduct after the 2020 election.

Trump’s statement, posted on Truth Social, accused Smith of being “Deranged” and claimed the Supreme Court had dealt him a “high level SPANKING.” He also criticized Smith’s “real” bosses, including Andrew Weissmann, Lisa Monaco, and Merrick Garland, who he claimed were furious at Smith’s handling of the case.

The Supreme Court’s decision, which was issued on Monday, was a partial victory for Trump, with the court agreeing that certain official acts by presidents are not prosecutable and requiring the government to clear a high bar before bringing charges. The decision means that much of the evidence presented by Smith against Trump could be dismissed, as it was related to actions taken within the scope of his official presidential duties.

The case will now be sent back to a Washington, D.C., district court, where Judge Tanya Chutkan will review the evidence and determine which, if any, charges still stand. The Supreme Court’s ruling makes it unlikely that the case will be heard before the 2024 presidential election.

Trump campaign adviser Alina Habba expressed optimism that the lower court’s reexamination of the case would “slow down Jack Smith’s persecution and selective prosecution of President Trump.” She also predicted that the case would not be heard before the election.
