GOP Approval Plummets and Dem Support Surges due to Johnson’s Betrayal

House Speaker Mike Johnson is facing a significant challenge next week as the House of Representatives votes on whether to remove him from his position. His support among Republicans and former President Donald Trump’s supporters has declined, while his popularity among Democrats and President Joe Biden’s supporters has increased.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene plans to introduce a resolution to oust Johnson from the Speakership. Democrats are expected to support Johnson by voting to table Greene’s resolution. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has taken control of the House and has made it clear that Democrats will protect Johnson. This has raised questions about why Democrats, who previously voted to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy, are now supporting Johnson.

Recent polls from the Economist and YouGov show a sharp shift in support for Johnson. In mid-April, Johnson’s approval ratings were underwater, with more disapproving than approving of his job performance. This divide was particularly stark among Trump and Biden voters, as well as Republicans and Democrats.

However, over the following weeks, Johnson’s support among Democrats increased while his support among Republicans decreased. This trend continued as Johnson’s approval ratings fluctuated each week. Despite the shifting support, Johnson emphasized the importance of a functioning Congress and his commitment to his role as Speaker.

As Johnson faces challenges from within his party, Greene has seen a slight increase in her approval ratings among Republicans and Trump supporters. The dynamics of support for both Johnson and Greene highlight the political divisions within the party.

In response to his declining poll numbers among Republicans and Trump supporters, Johnson reaffirmed his commitment to his role as Speaker and emphasized the need for a functional Congress. Despite concerns about his support among Republicans, Johnson remained focused on governing based on conservative principles and keeping the government running smoothly.
