Hartford, Connecticut’s Mayor Arunan Arulampalam (D) is speaking out against residents of a predominately black community for arming themselves to combat violent crime.

The New York Post reported that approximately 40 residents have organized themselves as the “Self-Defense Brigade.” These armed residents patrol their neighborhood streets at night and monitor homes and businesses using drones.

Lewis mentioned that every member of the brigade possesses a concealed carry permit and carries their firearms legally.

Mayor Arulampalam issued a statement condemning the group of armed citizens, stating, “Our community has experienced so much pain and trauma, and what we need is for those who love this city to do the hard work of healing that pain, not walking around our streets with guns trying to take the law into their own hands.”
