(Truth Voices) — Four Pennsylvania men, including a retired NASCAR driver who competed in the Winston Cup Series, are facing criminal charges in relation to the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol, federal officials disclosed this week.
Tighe Scott, 75, was one of the men arrested by the FBI and charged after federal authorities shared images and videos of the attack online, with one showing Scott identified as a former race car driver.
Scott was charged with two felony offenses, obstructing a law enforcement officer during a civil disorder and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers, as declared by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Joining Scott in facing charges are his son, Jarrett Scott, 48; Scott Slater Sr., 56; and Scott Slater Jr., 26.
Besides the felony charges, the former NASCAR driver was charged with five misdemeanor offenses, including unauthorized entry into restricted buildings or grounds, disruptive behavior in restricted buildings or grounds, engaging in violence in restricted buildings or grounds, causing disorderly conduct in the Capitol building or grounds, and violence in the Capitol building or grounds, according to federal officials.
Charging documents detail how the four men confronted a line of police officers, with Slater Jr. throwing a flagpole at the officers. It is alleged that Scott physically assaulted police riot shields and tried to grab a shield from an officer’s hands.
The complaint specified that Scott’s son and Slater Jr. used golf clubs to resist the officers, with Slater Jr. using his body weight against officers and jabbing an officer’s ribs before seizing a riot shield and engaging with law enforcement officials.
Scott, in his racing career that spanned 89 starts, achieved 18 top-10 finishes. His highest Winston Cup points finish was 13th, and he concluded his career in 1982, finishing 29th in the Daytona 500 after crashing on the 81st lap.
