Five migrants lost their lives during a five-day period in a Texas border sector. In the Del Rio Sector, previously the busiest area for migrant crossings in the country, these five migrants perished while attempting to reach the United States.
Unlike the many others who successfully entered the country during the Biden Administration’s first three years, these migrants were not so fortunate. Three died due to a migrant smuggler, one drowned in the Rio Grande, and another succumbed to the harsh and dry conditions of an isolated Texas ranch.
At a crash scene, two migrants died and several others were severely injured. Another migrant died after being taken to a San Antonio hospital. The driver fled the scene but was later apprehended. Authorities identified the suspected smuggler and driver as Asha Kisindja, a 21-year-old from Houston. The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) are investigating and will pursue federal charges against Kisindja for felony migrant smuggling with enhancements.
In another incident, Texas Department of Public Safety personnel retrieved the body of an unidentified migrant from the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass. The migrant is believed to have drowned while attempting to cross the river near Shelby Park.
The bodies of the deceased migrants in Eagle Pass were taken to a local funeral home, where efforts to identify them will continue. According to a law enforcement source, if identification efforts are unsuccessful, as has often been the case, the migrants will be given a pauper’s burial at a cemetery in Maverick County.
