Man Given 1-Day Probation for Shooting Inside Chicago Movie Theater

CHICAGO — A man who fired a shot inside a Chicago theatre during an argument with a teenager will not face jail time.

According to court records, Babacar Mbengue pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of reckless conduct. A Cook County judge sentenced him to one day of court supervision, and Mbengue is also required to pay court fines.

The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at the ICON Movie Theatre in South Loop, located in the 1100 block of South Delano Court.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the teenager exited a ride-share vehicle without paying his fare. Mbengue followed him into the theatre, resulting in a physical confrontation. During the altercation, a handgun fell from the teen’s pocket, and Mbengue picked it up and fired into the floor.

No injuries were reported.
