Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has found an unexpected supporter amid recent controversy: actress Patricia Heaton.
Butker’s commencement address at Benedictine College earlier this month sparked debate due to various comments, including remarks on a woman’s role in the home. Heaton, famous for her role in Everybody Loves Raymond, questioned the controversy, pointing out the audience’s positive reactions during Butker’s speech.
“I don’t understand why everybody’s knickers are in a twist. He gave a commencement speech,” Heaton said in an Instagram video. “The audience applauded twice during the speech and gave him a standing ovation at the end, so clearly they enjoyed what he was saying.”
Heaton noted that Butker was merely sharing his own views and addressing Catholic teachings at a Catholic institution. As a Catholic herself, she observed that Butker criticized bishops more than he did women.
“I find nothing offensive about what he said, even though my life is very different, and he might even look at my life and say that’s not the way it should be,” Heaton said. “That’s OK. That’s his opinion. God has used my life, so I’m just curious as to why people get offended. If you have made choices in your life and you feel those are the right choices and you’re comfortable and they’re working out for you and your family, great.”
Earlier this month, Heaton satirized a video from a Palestinian activist, jokingly stating that she had become “enemy number one” for her pro-Israel stance amid the nation’s conflict with Hamas.
In addition to Heaton, comedian Bill Maher also defended Butker, humorously noting their differing viewpoints but expressing confusion over the controversy surrounding the speech.
Despite facing some backlash, Butker has been commended by many for his speech, and sales of his jersey have surged since his appearance at Benedictine College.
