Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the artillery ammunition shortage facing Ukrainian troops during winter combat with Russia has been alleviated. Zelensky expressed that for the first time in years, brigades are no longer reporting a shortage of artillery shells. This improvement has been ongoing for the past two months, although Zelensky emphasized that more work still needs to be done.
This positive development is attributed to the delivery of Western military equipment, following Congress authorizing President Joe Biden to provide additional U.S. military supplies to Ukraine. Ukrainian forces, particularly those stationed opposite Russian artillery batteries, have been receiving significant amounts of ammunition, short-range air defense systems, and armored vehicles. This support has allowed Ukrainian forces to stabilize the Russians near Kharkiv, a major Ukrainian city where Russian forces have advanced recently.
While Russian President Vladimir Putin claims Moscow has no plans to take Kharkiv, Ukrainian General Oleksandr Syrskyi foresees heavy fighting in the region. Syrskyi emphasized the importance of preventing further enemy advances by maintaining occupied lines and positions, inflicting maximum losses through air strikes, missile systems, and artillery fire, and utilizing UAVs for attack advantage.
Zelensky also highlighted Ukrainian drones as a valuable asset, despite facing funding challenges in their production. He expressed the need for more resources to maximize the production of drones to enhance Ukraine’s military capabilities.
