A recent poll shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans no longer trust the media to provide accurate news coverage. According to a survey conducted by the American Press Institute and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 83 percent of respondents are concerned about the media reporting inaccurate information or disinformation during the upcoming 2024 election. Additionally, 81 percent worry about the media sharing unverified information, and 77 percent fear that the media may be biased in their coverage, only focusing on information that benefits their preferred candidates or harms their opponents.
The poll also found that 72 percent of participants are concerned about the media using artificial intelligence to generate news stories. These findings align with a previous Gallup poll that showed a significant decline in American trust in the media, with 39 percent of respondents indicating that they have no confidence in mass media.
The erosion of trust in the media can be traced back to events like the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings and the coverage of the Hunter Biden laptop scandal during the 2020 presidential election. The constant dishonesty from the media has contributed to a loss of confidence among voters. The survey was conducted on 2,468 adults and has a margin of error of +/-2.9 percent.
